FAMILY LEGACY REVIEW™

A better conversation starts with understanding the family.

The Family Legacy Review™ isn't about getting through a presentation or checking boxes.

It's your opportunity to understand the family sitting in front of you.

  • What do they already have?
  • What matters to them?
  • What are they concerned about?
  • What would they like to accomplish?

Listen first. Understand what matters. Then help them determine an appropriate next step.

WHAT I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER

Don't walk into a Family Legacy Review™ thinking you already know what the family needs.

You don't.

And don't rush ahead because you've heard a similar story before.

This is their family. Their circumstances. Their decisions.

  • Ask good questions.
  • Listen to their answers.
  • When they tell you something important, stay with it.
  • You don't have to control every minute of the conversation.

Your job is to understand before you recommend.

Use this packet during the Family Legacy Review™ to guide and document the conversation. Complete it naturally as you learn about the family, their current planning, assets, decision-makers, concerns, and what they would like to accomplish.

The packet supports the conversation. It is not a script.

HOW I WOULD APPROACH IT

When the Family Legacy Review™ begins, don't be in a hurry to prove how much you know.

Get interested in them.

  • Ask.
  • Listen.
  • Let them talk.

If they tell you something you weren't expecting, don't worry about getting back to your next question.

Stay there.

You might simply say:

“Tell me a little more about that.”

or:

“Why is that important to you?”

The better you understand the family, the easier it becomes to help them understand their options.

Discovery first. Recommendation second.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Before your next Family Legacy Review™, don't try to memorize the entire Facilitation Guide.

Review the flow.

Then choose three questions you genuinely want to know the answers to.

During the Review, ask them.

And listen.

Afterward, ask yourself:

  • What mattered most to this family?
  • What did I learn that I didn't know before the conversation?
  • Did my recommendation come from what they told me, or from what I assumed before I arrived?
